This is the kind of romance novel that makes it worth trudging through all the others, the ones that never quite rise to your expectations, because every now and then youโ€™ll come across a gem like this.

Colin and Minerva seem to fall in love on every single page. They both have these wild and unexpectedly intense feelings for each other, while at the same time both believing theyโ€™re not worthy of the others love. Which, as you read it, just seems crazy, because these are two of the most lovable characters Iโ€™ve come across.

They are so real. Alive. I would not be shocked to stumble across these two transported through time, living and breathing today. Their actions are true, their emotions so raw, their feelings so perfectly them. Colin has a habit of deliberately forgetting Minervaโ€™s name. Where this might have been irritating or belittling with so many other heroes, Colin manages to do it in an adorable way. And Minerva just takes it in a barely noticeable, but nevertheless meaningful show of acceptance.

They are absolutely perfect for each other. From the beginning they give each other exactly what they deserve. Whether itโ€™s a scorching retort, a glimpse of anguish in response to an insensitive remark, or throwing the others words in their face at the appropriate moment… or whether itโ€™s through clear, open honesty, devotion, and even deliverance, when they need it most. It didnโ€™t matter whether those things bruised them or built them up, they gave what the other deserved.

I say โ€œdeservedโ€ intentionally. Because there are time when someone deserves to be censured and others when they deserve to be cherished. This book captures that thoroughly. Perhaps the sweetest is during the final part of this book where theyโ€™re both giving to each other but taking for themselves in such an unselfish way.

All of the above is what made this book such a scorching hot read. From the very first chapter the tension, the desire, the longing, the chemistry, the everything… between these two just burns up the page and makes your insides melt. And not just the overtly sexual parts either. Every conversation is meaningful. Every interaction just tugs and makes you almost breathless. Itโ€™s the way they feel about each other and how they see each other. Just perfection.

My only criticism of this book is the set up for book number 3, which felt a little in your face, primarily because it was utterly pointless to this book. You could skip these parts entirely and not alter anything about Colin & Minervaโ€™s story. The only thing youโ€™d miss is some back story for the next book, but you could go back and reread that. Without them, this could have been a novel where the hero and heroine were on every single page of the book. That would have been pure bliss to read. I did not want to be taken out of their story.

This book is definitely a re-read and will go on my โ€œadoreโ€ shelf.
